Most decent size grocery stores today carry some of the top organic foods on the market, particularly in the produce section. While more people are buying up these foods, most don’t really understand the benefits of organic foods. Does eating organic food make you live longer? Can you really taste the difference between organic and inorganic foods? These are just some of the questions people want answered before spending the extra money to “go organic.”

What is Organic Food?

The term organic refers to organic food production. It’s an approach to raising and growing the food – nothing more or less. Four main differences set apart organic food production from more conventional techniques. For one, no chemical pesticides or herbicides are used on the crops. Instead, natural methods are used, such as using insects that kill the destructive insects to keep them away. Natural fertilizers are used over chemical ones, as well. Weeds are pulled by hand or controlled through mulch inside of by using chemicals. And the animals raised organically are fed a balanced, organic diet themselves and allowed access to the outdoors unlike those at most conventional animal ranches where they are fed antibiotics, growth hormones, and kept in tiny stalls.

The government regulates the organic food industry to ensure that conventional farmers are not allowed to label their products organic in order to raise the price. Make sure to look for the organic label before spending the extra money.

Benefits of Organic Food

When you understand the difference between conventional and organic food, you can begin to see some of the benefits of organic foods. For one, you don’t have to worry about the pesticide residue left on the produce you eat. You also don’t have to worry about ingesting large amounts of antibiotics and growth hormones which are fed to the animals nor do you have to worry about diseases, such as mad cow disease which is spread through animal populations when ranchers feed dead animals to other animals.

Organically grown food may also contain more nutrients. The reason is that conventional farming methods actually reduce the content of vitamins and minerals in food by depleting the soil through overuse and by using artificial fertilizers that bloat produce with water.

Some people also claim that organic foods simply taste better. There’s really no way of testing such a claim because taste preferences vary from person to person and are based on a variety of factors.

Organic Foods & Life Expectancy

Sadly, the United States is one of the only Western countries seeing a decline in life expectancy numbers. Most of the other countries that have had drops are also poor and, unfortunately, there is a clear gap in life expectancy between those with the most money and those with the least. Introducing more organic foods to the diet might help increase life expectancy but probably won’t help those who need the increase the most because they can’t afford to spend the extra money to buy organic produce.

Hormones such as estrogen or insulin are substances which are released by internal organs, glands or tissues. Their role is to regulate the activities of organs and cells in other parts of the body. The systems in the body that control the release of hormones are collectively known as the endocrine system.

Basics of Hormone Health

As well as being produced in the body, hormones are sometimes taken as medication. This is perhaps where a health hormone is taken in order to improve hormone health or to derive a health benefit. Examples include estrogen therapy and birth control pills.

Hormone health can have a number of effects on the body, but one of the more common effects of hormone imbalance is weight gain. Hormone treatment is perhaps more associated with women, however, men can also be effected and can be treated with hormone medication. Women with a hormonal imbalance may put on weight around their bodies mainly between the tops of the thighs and the armpits. The legs and arms tend to stay unaffected. Men tend to gain weight around the waist, and may even begin to develop what look like breasts.

The hormone estrogen is produced within the body in fat cells. Estrogen has the effect of increasing fat cells. The process can then spiral because as estrogen production increases, so does fat cell production which in turn increases estrogen production and so on. Identifying this problem and then treating it coupled with a weight loss program will break the cycle. Here’s how to go about it:

1. Get a diagnosis.

An appointment with your doctor should lead to a test which will assess the ratio of progesterone to estrogen you have in your body. If there is an estrogen dominance, this likely to be a contributory factor to weight gain.

2. Estrogen lowering program.

An estrogen lowering program may include medication to increase your levels of progesterone, although this is by no means the only measure you can take. There are other things that you can do to promote a healthy hormonal balance:
•	Eat more fiber.
•	Increase your intake of indoles. Dietary indoles are formed within plant cells. They can be found in a large number of plants but good dietary sources include cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower. Aim for 3 servings per day.
•	Increase your intake of essential fatty acids (EFAs). Fatty acids like those found in oily fish such as salmon and herring, help to regulate prostaglandin production in the body which helps to regulate estrogens. EFAs can also be taken as a dietary supplement.
•	Increase your intake of vitamin C either by using a dietary supplement or by eating more fresh fruit and vegetables.

3. Balance your meals.

As well as eating lean protein from good sources such as fish and chicken, make sure you eat plenty of fresh vegetables and compound carbohydrates. Opt for whole grains where possible, such as whole grain rice and pasta, and be careful with your portion size.

4. Exercise regularly.

Stay active by adopting a fitness program. This will help your over health and well being as well as weight management. You don’t necessarily need a gym membership. A regular brisk walk can be an excellent form of exercise, although some resistance training is advisable as it can be very beneficial for bone density.

Men and women who suffer from hormone imbalance frequently feel unwell and often gain weight. If you follow these simple tips, you can improve your hormone health which will increase your health and well being, and will help you lose weight.

Breathing Exercises Benefit Not Only Your Lungs But Entire Body

Breathing directly effects the quality and quantity of oxygen that circulates around our bodies through the blood. Oxygen levels in the blood may fall by around 20% due to the process of aging and normal breathing habits. Reduced oxygen caused by poor breathing can lead to decreased mental alertness and reduced energy levels. Poor breathing may also lead to stiffness in the muscles surrounding the rib cage as inhalation becomes harder. This can be caused by a lack of elasticity in the breathing muscles which can cause stale air to remain in the lungs, preventing fresh oxygen from entering the blood stream.

Poor breathing may also lead to or be caused by raid shallow breathing. This can also be caused by poor posture. Poor oxygen supply can lead to other serious complications such as heart disease and respiratory disease.

These breathing exercises are a simple way to improve your breathing, and therefore your overall health. They will exercise your breathing muscles, help to cleanse the lungs and are also an ideal way to release tension and stress.

Belly Breathing

Practice this breathing exercise for 5 minutes:

1. Lie on the floor, flat on your back. Use pillows to support under your neck and knees. Close your eyes and get a sense of deep breathing. Notice how your breathing causes a natural rise and fall in the stomach.

2. Put your hands on your stomach just at the base of your rib cage with the fingers of each hand barely touching one another - your lungs extend to around this point where the diaphragm is located. Take a slow, deep breath so that your middle rises, separating your fingers. This happens as your diaphragm expands and contracts in order to allow the lungs to fill and empty. As they do so, oxygen enters the blood stream on inhalation, and as you exhale, CO2 and other waste products from the blood stream are exhaled.

3. The movement of the diaphragm which causes your fingers to part indicates that the lungs are fully filling, rather than a partial filling of the lungs often known as “chest breathing”. Chest breathing fills the upper and middle parts of the lungs only, whereas “belly breathing” allows a greater volume of air to be circulated. Small children use this method instinctively until their chest develops and matures.

Complete Breath Exercise

Again practice this drill for 5 minutes.

1. Sit up straight with good posture and exhale.
2. As you inhale, try to relax your belly muscles. Complete a full inhalation and feel the sensation which might feel as though your belly is filling with air.
3. After your belly seems to be full, continue to inhale filling up the middle and upper parts of your chest. You will feel your rib cage expand as your lungs continue to fill.
4. Hold your breath for a brief moment and then begin your exhalation as slowly as you can.
5. As you exhale, and the air escapes, relax your chest. You can then begin to pull in your belly in order to force out the remaining air in the lungs.
6. As you carry out this exercise, concentrate on your breathing, feel and listen as the air enters and exits your lungs. Try to relax and allow the tension in your facial muscles to release.

These simple exercises or methods of breathing will help you develop better breathing which can have a very positive effect on your overall health. Practice them every day for the best results and you will feel the benefits not only to your breathing, but to your sense of well being.

It is fairly common knowledge that people come in different shapes and sizes. It can be useful to know what body type you are so that you can better understand your metabolism, and how diet and exercise will effect you. Different body types, and the associated metabolism, will also effect your propensity to put on weight in fat, and your ability to build lean muscle through training. There are three body types: endomorph, ectomorph and mesomorph.

Endomorph

Endomorphs are naturally big and carry more fat. The body shape itself looks wide, round, soft and curvy. An endomorph may look like he or she carries weight around their waist but his may not always be the case as they will naturally be wide, often with a round face and with a large overall bone structure. Buttocks and thighs also tend to be larger. An endomorph will usually have a larger amount of fat storage due to the fact that they have a higher number of fat cells than other body types. Their body shape typically is apple or pear shaped. Endomorphs also have the slowest metabolism and therefore find it relatively difficult to lose weight and they tend to gain weight easily. If you are an endomorph and want to boost your metabolism, consider a nutrition and exercise program. Drink plenty of water (1.5 to 2 liters per day) and eat smaller meals, more often (4-6 meals per day) with good food choices consisting of lean protein, a small amount of carbohydrate (preferably whole grain) and plenty fresh vegetables and fruit. Exercise regularly. A regular brisk walk will help to burn fat, while some resistance training will help boost your metabolism and build lean muscle.

Mesomorph

Mesomorphs have a naturally athletic build. Female mesomorphs have an hourglass shape, while males are triangular/rectangular. Mesomorphs enjoy the advantage of being able to lose weight easily and can also develop lean muscle relatively easily. Even though they enjoy a physical advantage, mesomorphs may still become overweight or obese through lack of exercise and/or poor nutrition. Mesomorphs have a moderate metabolism and will therefore put on weight if there is a sufficient calorie surplus (i.e. if their calorific intake is sufficiently greater than the amount of calories they burn in energy expenditure).

Ectomorph

Ectomorphs tend to be slim and petite. They have small bones and their musculature tends to be lean. The ectomporph body shape is linear or rectangular. They are not very curvaceous and are often flat chested, with naturally low body fat. Ectomorph metabolism is naturally very high, and they therefore find it very difficult to gain weight either as fat or as lean muscle. Although their risk of obesity is low, a healthy diet and exercise program is just as important for the ectomorph in order to ensure good overall health.

It is important to take into account your body type, especially when you are considering figures such as the Body Mass Index (BMI) which does not take into account body composition. A good indication of your body type is the size if your wrist, as it is one of the few bones in the human body whose size you can see all the way around. Once you know your body type, you will be in a better position to assess your natural rate of metabolism and how best to achieve your physical goals.

One of the most serious, chronic diseases that can affect the young is diabetes. Recognizing children diabetes symptoms is critical because it leads to faster treatments, as well as a reduction in the risk of developing diabetic complications. However, noticing these symptoms can be difficult.

Diabetes Explained

Diabetes is a problem associated with insulin production. Insulin is needed to allow your body’s cells to use up the glucose in your blood for energy. Without insulin, your body can’t use that sugar and you have a build-up of sugar in your blood. The sugar can cause damage to other parts of your body and can affect circulation.

Two types of diabetes affect children. Type 1 diabetes (also known as insulin-dependent) occurs because the immune system wrongly begins attacking cells within the pancreas (the organ that produces insulin in the body). As a result, the damaged pancreas cannot produce any insulin. To survive, people afflicted with this type of diabetes must take insulin injections for the rest of their lives. Annually, about 13,000 children and adolescents are diagnosed with this type of diabetes which is sometimes also called juvenile diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes was less common in children until recent years. Today, the number of children under the age of 18 being diagnosed has risen considerably. The main difference is that this type of diabetes can be controlled through exercise, diet, and other lifestyle changes. However, some patients do still require insulin injections to minimize the risk of complications.

Diabetes Symptoms in Children

The signs of type 2 diabetes and juvenile diabetes are almost identical. In both cases, you should watch for increased thirst and urination in your child. For example, if your child suddenly begins waking up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom or to get a drink of water, he or she may be showing some of the most common symptoms of diabetes in children.

Because the cells are begin deprived of the energy they need, your child may begin to tire easily and may show signs of fatigue. This is often quite noticeable with young children. Children may also become hungrier but may end up losing weight despite consuming more food.

If your child has injuries, such as cuts, that seem to heal more slowly than they should, this could also be a sign of diabetes. The excess sugar in the blood can hinder circulation which is necessary for effective healing.

Misconceptions

Many children who suffer from Type 1 diabetes have their symptoms ignored by their families because they believe only overweight people suffer from this disease. That is not the case with either type of diabetes. However, most young people diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes are obese. Since Type 1 diabetes is not related to nutrition but to a problem with how the body operates, it can strike any child, regardless of weight.

Because diabetes can lead to severe complications, including coma and blindness, parents who see any of these symptoms of diabetes in children should immediately contact their physician so their child can be tested for the disease.

Of all the chemicals we take into our bodies willing, the one with which we have the biggest “love-hate” relationship is probably caffeine. On the one hand, millions of us feeling unable to function without a good helping of the stuff while at the same time we worry about what effects too much caffeine could be having on our hearts and nervous system. Now there seems to be a connection between caffeine and weight loss success which means our relationship with this chemical is only going to get more complicated.

Understanding Caffeine

Although we often think of caffeine as an unnatural substance, it actually does occur naturally. You’ll find it in leaves and seeds from a number of different types of plants, including the coffee plant. However, many of our products that are high in caffeine, such as soda or energy drinks, achieve those levels by adding caffeine artificially to them.

The effects caffeine has on the body are well-known. Like any stimulant, caffeine goes right for the nervous system and gives it a bit of zap to get us up and moving. After taking in caffeine, most people are more alert, in a better mood, and more energetic.

While a little caffeine can do wonders for you, too much can have some unpleasant consequences, including headaches, anxiety, sleeplessness, and dizziness. Over time, the more caffeine we consume the more we will need to get desirable effects because our body gets used to having the caffeine around. Additionally, if you’ve been a steady caffeine abuser, trying to break the habit can be a difficult task and many former caffeine users claim they experienced withdrawal symptoms.

Caffeine and Metabolism

When it comes to the question of caffeine and weight loss, most people suspect there is a positive relationship because research has shown that caffeine can increase metabolic rates, at least temporarily. Your metabolism controls how many calories you need to burn for energy. Higher rates are going to mean you’ll go through a lot more calories thus leaving fewer behind to turn into unwanted fat cells.

One study divided individuals into a group of people who used less than 300 mg of caffeine per day and a second group which used more than 300 mg of caffeine per day to determine whether or not green tea, which is high in caffeine, would have an impact on their metabolism and weight loss. For the group of people who used the higher levels of caffeine, weight loss numbers were also higher which suggested a connection between caffeine intake and increased metabolism. However, the group’s ability to maintain that weight loss was less. Some research suggests the reason may be that caffeine increases the production of stress hormones in the body which make it harder to keep weight off.

Other reasons why caffeine could result in temporary weight loss is that it acts as both a diuretic and an appetite suppressant. The former means you’ll urinate more and drop pounds thanks to reduced water retention. The latter means you may eat less at some points which might be made up for later.

If you’re looking for foods that speed metabolism, consider chocolate which includes natural amounts of caffeine as well as other health beneficial ingredients.

We’ve all heard that obesity is becoming a bigger problem in the United States and in other parts of the Western world. Unfortunately, the problem is not an easy one to tackle. Because of the one-two punch of fatigue and inactivity, most people who are overweight are going to remain that way even if they do reduce their calorie intake. The good news is there are some ways to fight back.

Relationship between Inactivity & Obesity

One of the primary causes of obesity is inactivity combined with taking in too many calories. Because of the already unhealthy diet most Americans are consuming, including a lot of high-fat fast food, their caloric intake has dramatically increased. However, fewer Americans are doing anything to burn off that extra weight. According to one study, around 40% of Americans don’t engage in any regular, physical activity. Without some type of activity to increase the energy demands of the body, most of those extra calories are going to be turned into fat and stored in the body. When the calorie intake continues to be high and the amount of activity stays the same or decreases, the stored fat can’t be used up and actually continues increasing which leads to obesity.

Ways to Prevent Obesity

Paying more attention to how much we eat is one obvious way of preventing obesity, but so is increasing our activity levels. Making changes before you gain too much weight are easier than once you are already obese because all of that extra weight is going to increase your fatigue and put more stress on your body which makes any type of activity more difficult and less desirable, especially if you’re already not a fan of exercise.

Of course, some people also have a greater tendency to become obese thanks to their genetics. If you have a family history of obesity, you should be even more active in reducing your possibilities for excessive weight gain. Chances are you would also have a greater family history of obesity-related diseases, such as heart disease and diabetes, too.

Fatigue & Activity

One of the most difficult obstacles to overcome for someone who is already obese is to add activity to their lifestyle because they are tired all of the time. They may feel so exhausted that they literally can’t imagine exercising. This could be worsened because of sleep apnea which prevents them from getting a good night’s sleep and makes them feel tired throughout the day.

However, the biggest reason most people feel fatigued is because of a lack of physical exercise. As little as a 20 to 30 minute walk can actually help you feel less tired. While walking is a great, low-impact type of exercise that would be ideal for people who are overweight or who are trying to increase their activity levels, there are also other options.

Swimming is another good one, too. Because the water makes you more buoyant, your body doesn’t feel the strain and pressure of your excess weight so you can exercise more easily without damaging your joints and muscles. Doing some weight lifting to increase your lean muscle mass is also good because it will speed up your metabolism and help you burn more calories and lose weight.

The news is full of reports about high blood pressure, increased rates of diabetes, and development of more joint and growth problems because of obesity. However, many of these reports are focusing on the youngest members of society. Obesity in American children has skyrocketed in recent years and is threatening the next generation with momentous physical and emotional health risks. Thankfully, this problem can be prevented if more people recognize the severity of the problem, its causes, and some important steps that can be taken in the right direction.

A Growing Problem

The statistics of childhood obesity are enormous. Since 1980, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has found the rate of obesity among children between 6 and 19 years of age has tripled. For preschoolers, the rate has doubled. Even a large number of children who are not currently classified as being overweight are at risk. Another CDC study found that 15% of kids under 19 were at risk of becoming overweight.

While being obese has a child can lead to the early onset of health problems, it can also be a tremendously powerful risk factor in the development of adult obesity. The majority of overweight teens do not lose weight as they get older. In fact, about 70% of them will continue to be overweight or obese as adults. If their parents were also heavy, the risk goes up another 10%.

As a result of these high numbers, children are at an increasing risk of developing diseases that are often associated with obesity. With Type 2 diabetes, for example, the risk of developing the disease during an entire lifetime is now 30 to 40% for the younger generation. Many are developing the disease earlier and earlier which increases the risk of serious complications in the future.

Causes of Childhood Obesity

One of the most startling statistics of all is that about one-third of all children between the ages of 4 and 19 are eating fast food for at least one meal every single day. With those types of nutritional habits, it is obvious why childhood obesity is becoming such a serious problem. Fast food is notoriously high in saturated fat and calories while being relatively low in nutritional value. Plus, fast food eaters tend to not have very balanced diets so they are not going to be getting the vegetables, fruits, fiber, and other foods they need to fight back against these bad habits.

Another cause is the lack of activity. Today, children are sheltered in their homes instead of being encouraged to go outside and play. Fewer children walk to school and more schools are cutting out recess as well as mandatory gym classes which further reduces time for exercise.

Child Obesity Prevention

Lifestyle changes within individual families are the best way to combat the problem. Improving diet and increasing exercise levels can make a tremendous impact on kids. Parents need to realize that the health habits they learn now are going to follow them into their adulthood. Setting a good example is a great choice, even overweight parents who start working towards dropping pounds and reducing their sedentary habits can help their children.

At a broader level, parents can being petitioning their schools to bring back mandatory gym classes and to ensure that each child in the school is receiving some type of exercise every day.

Although low-carb diets were all the rage just a few years ago, most nutritional experts are now steering patients away from such an approach to weight loss. The reason is simple: carbohydrates are not the enemy. In fact, we need carbs for energy and to keep our bodies working but we need to be more selective in choosing those carbohydrates we do eat. By making a conscious effort to our eating habits, we can actually enjoy carbohydrates in moderation without throwing our diets off track or putting ourselves at risk for diabetes.

Good Carbs Bad Carbs

You may have heard some people discussing good carbs and bad carbohydrates in the media or on the Internet. The distinction is made because some of the carbohydrates available are going to be better choices for your body than others. In general, refined carbohydrates are going to fall under the “bad” umbrella.

Refined carbohydrates, sometimes known as simple carbs, are easier for your body to digest because they have been processed many times already. Anything made with refined flours or sugars, such as pastry or white rice, would be examples of bad carbs. These foods go through your body quickly leaving behind a positive shot of energy but they leave you wanting more quickly.

The better choices are complex carbohydrates, such as whole grains and fiber-rich vegetables. Because these items have not been as greatly refined and because they tend to all be higher in fiber content, they take longer for your body to digest. That means you’re going to feel full longer and that the energy content of the foods will be more slowly released into your body. Also, anything that takes more energy to digest is going to give your metabolism a little more of a boost which is a definite plus if you’re interested in weight loss.

One exception to the rules above is fruit. Most fruits are actually classified as simple carbohydrates. However, they are still an important part of your diet because of all the nutritional elements they contain, including vitamins. With fruits though, you want to choose fresh produce choices over juices and canned varieties so you can minimize the amount of refined sugar you are consuming and also benefit from the fiber found in the different fruits.

The Question of Alcohol Carbohydrates

One cause of confusion for many people who are concerned about their carbohydrate intake is the role of alcohol. For a long time, people were told that high levels of alcohol carbohydrates could raise blood sugar levels. However, that’s not the case. Because of the way alcohol interacts with your liver, it can actually decrease your blood sugar which could be dangerous, especially if you have not had anything else to eat.

That doesn’t mean alcohol is a good choice. While a drink or two in moderation may be fine occasionally, you do need to remember that these drinks are full of empty calories and contain no valuable nutrition. It’s the same as drinking sugary soda in that regard. Plus, if you do have diabetes, alcohol consumption can make many of your symptoms worse and can increase the damage from complications of the disease.

If you’ve been listening to commercials or reading health articles on the Internet, there’s a good chance you’ve heard the terms probiotics and prebiotics before. That’s because they are part of a growing trend in the nutritional industry and are considered the next big wave in what’s supposed to be good for you. Since you’ll be hearing a great deal more about probiotics and prebiotics in the coming months and years, now is a good time to become more familiar with them.

What are Probiotics?

Probiotics have been defined by the World Health Organization as living microorganisms that provide health benefits to their hosts. Most are very similar to organisms we currently have inside our bodies right now. For example, we have good bacteria inside our digestive tract that helps keep us healthy. Probiotics help in much the same way as they would.

Evidence is still being collected on the effectiveness of probiotics but initial findings have shown promising treatment benefits for many conditions, including irritable bowel syndrome, vaginal yeast infections, and even childhood eczema. While many foods in the Asian market have already begun to be enhanced with probiotics, this is just now beginning in the United States. The most high profile examples are some of the yogurt brands which have incorporated probiotic bacteria strains, such as the Bifidobacteria.

A growing part of the probiotic culture is the combining of these living microorganisms with prebiotics to create what are known as synbiotics. The idea is that these different compounds complement each other and increase the impact of their respective health benefits.

What are Prebiotics?

Beyond probiotics are prebiotics which are non-digestible compounds found in the foods we eat naturally. These prebiotics are believed to stimulate the activity of the probiotics just as they would help increase the effectiveness of the naturally growing bacteria living in our bodies. One of the most common prebiotics identified so far has been a type of starch which has been found in low amounts in many of the foods we normally eat, including onions, bananas, and asparagus.

However, prebiotics can be added to almost any type of food or beverage quite easily. Since these compounds are not alive as the probiotics are, they are much easier to use as an additive. In fact, England already has a wide array of prebiotic-enhanced products on the market, including cereals, waters, breads, and more.

While some of these products have relatively low levels of prebiotics, the good news is that it may not take much to help them do their job. Just five grams of prebiotics are needed to make the popular Bifidobacteria work effectively.

Who Should Be Taking Them?

At this point, more needs to be learned about probiotics and prebiotics before concrete health recommendations can be made. You may not want to go out of your way to add supplements and enhanced foods to your diet yet. However, if you do have digestive problems or if you want to give some of these products a try, there’s no reason not to indulge in a little Bifidobacteria or other probiotics with a touch of prebiotics every now and then.

If losing weight could happen overnight or even in the course of a week, no one would be overweight or obese. Think about it: if every diet that promises you can lose ten pounds in a week were realistic and effective then a woman weighing 230 pounds could drop down to a healthy weight in just under three months. Even the most die-hard food enthusiast could handle that type of short-term commitment. However, when it comes to how fast can you lose weight, the question really depends on the results you want.

Fast or Slow Weight Loss

If you only have a few pounds to shed so you can zip up that new dress or feel more comfortable in your bikini, fast weight loss might not be a big deal. After all, keeping the pounds off is probably not going to be imperative. However, if you have a lot of weight to lose and you want to improve your physical condition long-term, you’ve got to think more like the turtle and less like the hare: slow and steady wins the weight loss race.

Fast Safe Weight Loss

The good news is you can find the quickest way to lose weight without having to put your healthy in danger. None of those appetite suppressants or metabolism stimulators is needed either. One thing you will need to is dramatically increase your water consumption. When you lose weight fast, most of what you lose is water weight so if you drink a lot and urinate a lot, you’re going to lose more weight. Of course, this weight usually returns in a couple of days so be ready for it.

Slashing your portions is a good idea, too. But make sure you’re eating more fiber-rich foods that fill you up and help you lose more weight through excretion as well. Lower your intake of carbs but remember you do need some for energy. Normally, cutting back too much too fast is a bad idea because your metabolism will slow down dramatically. If you only need to lose a small amount of weight quickly, this isn’t going to be much of a problem, although it could cause you to regain those lost pounds fast.

Better Strategies for Long-Term Weight Loss

While fast weight loss strategies like those above may work in the short haul, they will only provide disappointment if you are serious about losing a large amount of weight. This takes a lot of effort and a permanent commitment to making healthier lifestyle choices. For example, instead of drinking gallons of water a day, always make sure you drink at least eight classes to keep your body hydrated. Reduce your calories slowly by about 10% then keep reducing over a longer time period so you don’t shock your metabolism into stand still which is one of the leading causes of the plateau effect in dieting.

Most physicians don’t recommend losing more than two pounds a week. That means dropping 100 pounds would take almost an entire year, not just three months. Plus, you’d have to continue working on the process, maintaining the changes you’ve implemented, and adding more activity to lifestyle. In the end, this approach is going to be the healthiest and most long-lasting way to lose weight.

The aging process is complex and involves all the areas and systems in your body. There is no known cure for aging, and pills or potions that claim to halt the aging process will only ever be a partial solution. However, there are a number of things that you can do that will help to slow the aging process, and will also improve your overall health, well being and quality of life.

For a longer life, and a more youthful appearance, try these:

1. Eat Healthy Diet

Fruit and vegetables are packed full of the vitamins and minerals that your body needs to operate, for example vitamin C is crucial to the immune system and can help you fight infections such as cold and flu. They also contain antioxidants that can help slow the aging effects of free radicals (more about free radicals below). To maintain the nutrient levels in fruit and vegetables, eat them fresh, and if you need to cook vegetables, steam them as boiling has a greater reductive effect on nutrient levels, particularly water soluble vitamins. Eating well will help keep your weight to a healthy level, which will make you much less likely to suffer from any of the many illnesses associated with obesity.

2. Drink Plenty of Water

Drinking water is good for your organs because it helps to flush out toxins. People who drink water regularly often notice improved skin condition and vitality as a result. Drinking water can also help to stimulate your metabolism. Dehydration can make your body retain water, which can have a detrimental effect on kidney function. This has a knock on effect on your liver in that it has to help the kidneys to deal with waste products. This detracts from the liver’s other function of burning stored fat which the body uses as energy. Try to drink 1.5 to 2 liters of water per day. This will have the added benefit that if you are trying to lose weight, it will to stop you feeling hungry whilst maintaining proper hydration.

3. Use Sunscreen when UV is High

As well as potentially causing life threatening skin cancer, the sun has an aging effect on the skin. Prolonged exposure to the sun tends to cause the face to develop deep wrinkles and an almost “leathery” appearance. A good sun screen will not only protect you from the effects of the sun, it will also moisturize your skin, helping to keep it supple and preventing drying which can also have an aging effect.

4. Use Antioxidants

Antioxidants can be found in a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, some meats, and some drinks such as green tea. They help to reduce or stop the damaging effects of freed radicals at the cellular level, thereby slowing the aging process. Antioxidants are produced in the body, although the rate of production reduces as age increases. Top up your antioxidant levels with anti aging vitamins such as vitamin C, and develop an anti aging diet rich in fresh fruit and vegetables.

5. Work Out

Exercise will help you maintain a healthy weight, can help with bone density and is good for your mental health. It can also improve circulation and digestion. Try to include some cardiovascular work like a brisk walk or a cycle, and some resistance training. Include exercise in your daily routine, and you will soon see the benefits of improved health.

And Finally Stop Smoking (If You Are A Smoker). The aging effects of smoking are well known, as are the various serious and chronic diseases it can cause. Need I say any more?

Vitamin C is undoubtedly one of the best known vitamins, and its many benefits are often written about in the popular press and fitness journals. It is best known for its antioxidant properties, its anti-aging effect and the positive effect it can have on the immune system health, particularly in fighting viruses. Vitamin C is a water-soluble and therefore tends to be excreted quickly from the body, especially when it is in surplus. It is critical to many bodily functions and has many beneficial properties. Almost all mammals can produce the vitamin at the cellular level, however, human beings are an exception.

Vitamin C plays a largely protective role within the human body. The potential benefits of taking vitamin C were explored in the 1700’s. It was found to help prevent scurvy, which was common among sailors because they went on lengthy voyages (both in time and distance) and were eventually deprived of fresh produce as food stores ran out. The British Royal Navy discovered that fresh limes were a good source of vitamin C. As a result, British sailors became known as “limeys”, and the beneficial effects of vitamin C became known as the “antiscorbutic factor”.

Further research revealed that vitamin C has more extensive benefits than protecting against the effects of scurvy. The ingestion of vitamin C has also been shown to protect against cardiovascular diseases, cancer, joint diseases and cataracts. All these conditions can result from a deficiency in vitamin C. Vitamin C is also known as an antioxidant. Antioxidants work by scavenging particles in the body called free radicals. Medical research has shown that free radicals damage genetic material and cell proteins and can leave cells vulnerable to cancer. The aging process has also been connected to the presence of free radicals as well as a variety of conditions and illnesses. Antioxidant enzymes like the ones found in vitamin C can assist in neutralizing free radicals. By doing so, they might prevent some of the damage and associated problems they can cause, and slow the aging process.

The requirement for vitamin C varies greatly between individuals depending, among other factors, on physical characteristics and level of activity . A person’s age and health can also have an important effect on an individual’s vitamin C requirement.
Although there are many good sources of vitamin C, the vitamin content in foods varies greatly. As a general rule, fruits and vegetables that are not ripe have a much lower vitamin C content than those that are ripe. However, during the ripening process, the vitamin C content peaks and then it begins to reduce as the fruit or vegetable gets older. It is also true that vitamin C content reduces as the time between harvest and eating increases. The best vitamin C food sources are fresh fruits, vegetables, and even some herbs. Parsley, broccoli, oranges, bell pepper, oranges, lemons, strawberries, papaya, kale, cauliflower, mustard greens and Brussels sprouts are all good sources.

Vitamin C is very sensitive substance, and vitamin content can be effected by air temperature and water. Processing methods, such as freezing, cooking and canning can all have a detrimental effect on vitamin C content. Raw fresh fruit and vegetables are the best way to maximize vitamin C intake, whilst steaming as a method of cooking preserves more vitamin C than boiling where soluble vitamin C can be lost in the water.

Many of us have heard that carbohydrates are bad. The emphasize just a few short years ago on high-protein diets seemed to push dieters further away from ostracizing carbohydrates from their lives but doing so comes at a cost. When you cut out the carbs, you also cut out an important energy source, as well as one of the important macronutrients your body needs to function. The key isn’t to eliminate all carbs but to choose only healthy sources of carbohydrates.

Two Types of Carbohydrates

Carbs come in two categories: complex and simple. Complex carbohydrates get their name because they are more difficult for the body to digest, usually because of their high fiber content. When eaten in moderation, these can be healthy carbohydrates. You’ll find them in most vegetables, all of your whole grain foods, as well as in potatoes.

On the other hand, simple carbs go through your system quickly. They provide more sugar to the body which means they can be an excellent source of quick energy and a good way to raise blood sugar if you are diabetic. Fruit carbohydrates are one of the best and healthiest simple carbs. Most simple carbohydrates are not good choices for your diet because they contain high quantities of sugar. Cakes, cookies candy, and syrup are all examples. Any sweet sodas or teas would fall into this category as well.

Moderation is the Key

While you want to find healthy carbohydrates, you still don’t want to overdo your intake of them. Although orange juice can be a wonderful carb source, if that’s all you drink during the day you’re going to have ingested quite a few calories which is not healthy.

The basic rule if you are trying to maintain your current weight is to consume 250 grams of healthy carbohydrates every day. To give you an idea of how much carb-rich food that number represents, an entire cup of whole wheat pasta will provide 30 grams of those carbs. A half cup of orange juice or 17 grapes provide 15 grams.

Sweeteners: To Use or Not to Use

If you’ve started reading food labels and you want to avoid bad simple carbohydrates, you should look for sugar on those labels. Keep in mind though that not all sugar is going to be labeled as such. Many of the sweeteners used in our products come under a number of names, such as high fructose corn syrup, sucrose, fructose, and nearly a dozen of others. Don’t be surprised if you see multiple sources of sweetening in a single product either.

Of course, if you’re serious about reducing the amount of sugar in your diet, you may want to consider artificial sweeteners. Many of these are on the market and although some have been controversial people continue using them with little negative results. One concern, however, voiced by some is that the sweetness from them can actually stimulate your appetite and end up making you eat more food which overshadows the purpose of using the artificial sweeteners in the first place.

Zinc is an essential mineral, and the ingestion of zinc and zinc stored in your body is crucial for the proper and healthy functioning of various natural processes and senses, including taste and smell. Zinc is needed for growth and development throughout our lives, and even plays a role in fetal development during pregnancy. Our immune systems also relies on zinc for healthy and effective functioning.

Zinc is very important for reproductive functions, particularly in men: regular ingestion of zinc has a positive effect on prostate gland health and it has also been shown to improve levels of testosterone in the blood. A sufficient intake of zinc can also improve the quality of sperm, and increase sperm count. If you are planning to start or add to your family, supplementation with zinc is well worth considering.

As well helping with healthy immune function, zinc can also help to fight infections, in particular flu and the cold virus. Zinc can also assist with healing and recovery. It can help you to recover from a sore throat or from a variety of injuries from more serious wounds and burns through to less serious cuts and grazes. As well as being an important nutrient in its own right, zinc also helps the body to absorb other important nutrients, such as vitamin A which is critical for your sight, cellular growth and the growth of your bones. Zinc also helps to release vitamin A which is stored in your liver. Some studies have also shown that zinc can improve your athletic performance, especially of you are deficient in the mineral.

You can become deficient in Zinc if you do not eat enough food containing it, or if your body does not absorb enough of the zinc that you have ingested. You might also excrete too much zinc, or your body may have an increased requirement for the mineral unmatched by an increased intake or absorption. If you are deficient in zinc, you may experience slowed growth, diarrhea, loss of hair, impotence, skin or eye conditions, or loss of appetite. You may also experience a reduction in body weight, tiredness, or you may find that cuts or grazes you might have heal more slowly. If you think you might have a zinc deficiency, make an appointment to see your doctor. He will be able to assess your zinc levels, and can advise you on how best to address any deficiency.

The best way to ingest zinc is through regular dietary sources, although a vitamin and mineral tablet can be a good “insurance policy” so that you can be reassured that your body is receiving the correct level of nutrients.
The most potent sources of zinc include oysters and meat (including liver). 6 oysters will provide you with a whopping 43 mg of zinc (approximately). The daily recommended intake of zinc is between 5.5mg and 9.5mg for men and between 4 and 7mg for women. A medium portion of beef of 85g (about the size of a deck of cards) will provide you with about 5.8mg of zinc. Other good sources include pork (2.2mg per 85g portion), chicken (similar to zinc content in pork, especially the dark meat), cheese, wheat germ, seeds and nuts (especially pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, Brazil nuts and almonds). Also, whole grains, beans (including baked beans), chickpeas and milk contain good amounts of zinc.

Meat is a very important source of zinc. Although there are numerous good vegetarian sources of zinc, a vegetarian diet can cause a zinc deficiency. This can be due to phytates which are found mainly in grains. They react with zinc to make it impossible for the body to absorb it. It is therefore very important that anyone on, or thinking about starting a vegetarian diet, should consider a zinc supplement, and ensure that there are sufficient sources of zinc in their diet.

Stress is a part of all of our lives, whether you consider yourself to be very laid back or whether you are highly strung. Stress need not always be a negative aspect of your life: it can make you react positively in certain situations. Excitement, competition and exertion are all forms of stress that can play a positive role in your life. However, stress is better known for having a negative impact. A feeling that you cannot cope with the various and complex aspects of everyday life can become overwhelming, and for some can lead to significant mental health issues. Here are 5 simple stress relief techniques to help avoid the effects of stress:

#1. Learn How And When To Say “No”

Everyone has responsibility in their lives, whether it is for family, work, property or simply getting food to eat every day. A life that is more complex seldom solves any problems with stress. Therefore, choose the things you accept responsibility for carefully, both in your professional and personal life. If you accept extra responsibilities you have the double stress impact of having to honor that responsibility while having less time for you/your family. Everyone likes to be helpful, but be realistic and honest about your limitations and capacity, and let some commitments go. Don’t be afraid to delegate tasks and remember to preserve valuable time for yourself and your family.

#2. Exercise Regularly

We all know that exercise promotes physical health, but it can also have an extremely positive effect on mental health. If you have stress in your life, exercise is an excellent stress reliever. Exercise can help put stress factors into perspective, while releasing endorphins into your body, which will help give you a sense of well being and a more positive outlook. Regular exercise will also help you feel better about yourself and your overall health. And exercise need not be in a gym or on a soccer pitch. A regular 30 minute brisk walk at lunch time will bring you the positive effects of exercise and will help improve your cardiovascular fitness and will burn fat.

#3. Healthy Diet

Similarly, what you eat can have a positive or negative effect on how stressed you can feel. A poor diet can cause you to put on weight and can also effect factors such as cholesterol and blood pressure, which can leave you feeling physically tired and less able to cope with the demands of everyday life. Foods that are highly processed, such as fast food, tend to be rich in salt and sugar, and tend to cause a blood sugar spike. The effect of such a spike can make you feel energised for a short period, after which you tend to crash into feeling very tired. Choose natural, unprocessed foods that will provide you with a consistent supply of energy throughout the day. Whole grain foods and fresh fruit and vegetables are usually good choices. Avoid processed fast foods, and avoid relying on foods that are heavy in stimulants such as caffeine.

#4. Talk About Your Troubles

One factor that can greatly increase the effect of stressful factors in our lives is the feeling that we are alone to deal with whatever troubles us. Stress can be reduced by discussing your problems with a friend or family member, or by joining some form of support network or group. People often say that “a problem shared is a problem halved” because merely having someone who is prepared to listen will allow you to lay out your problem logically, helping to find a solution, rather than going over the same problem time and again in your head. Also, the perspective of another person can often be valuable in dealing with a problem or source of stress.

#5. Take A Vacation

Finally, take a day off! Some time away can give you some valuable time to evaluate your life and approach your problems from a position where you can look at your life without having to deal with everyday issues. Also, lack of rest can be a stress multiplier. A holiday will leave you feeling rested and refreshed, and better placed to deal with whatever stress factors you have in your life.

Stress is a part of all of our lives, but by taking some simple steps, you can help to avoid its worst effects. Take a structured approach to your problems and to your overall health and well being, and you will be better able to deal with stress in a positive way.

When you want to lose weight, you need to pay attention to your metabolism. Without a healthy metabolism, you are simply going to have a lot more trouble shedding those unwanted pounds and dropping down to the weight you want. If you can increase your metabolism while also doing some carb counting, you can boost your ability to drop weight and to improve your overall health.

Carbohydrate Metabolism Explained

As you may already know, carbohydrates come in two varieties: simple and complex. Simple carbs could also be called sugar carbs because this category includes fructose, glucose, lactose, and other simple sugars that the body can breakdown quickly and get into your bloodstream. Complex carbs typically would be classified as starches, such as grains, potatoes, vegetables, and similar foods. To give your body energy, these foods must first be broken down into simple sugars by your body. This takes more effort and causes your metabolism to work harder so it takes more energy. The slowness of the process also means the energy will be released more slowly and over a longer period of time.

Once both types of carbs have been reduced into sugars, they enter the bloodstream. Insulin from the pancreas helps the cells in the body take in some of the sugar which it then uses as energy to power the activities of that cell, including cell division.

Carbs Fat & Other Foods

Many people, especially those who have weight problems, don’t feel that they eat much. In fact, physicians are always hearing patients who are confused about their high weight say, “I don’t understand why I’m not losing weight. I don’t eat that much.” The problem is that people don’t have a realistic idea of how many calories their bodies need to keep working. Generally, most people only need 2,000 calories a day. Children, pregnant or nursing mothers, and body builders may need more.

When asked to keep track of their food intake, most people are surprised to see that their daily calories far exceed this number. And if those foods are full of sugar or starch that excess sugar can end up overworking the pancreas which can lead to insufficient insulin production and the development of diabetes.

Keeping Tracking of Carbs

Carb counting is one of the best ideas because it gives you a good way to monitor the largest contributors to your daily calorie consumption. Most meat and fish are relatively low in calories, although they can be higher in saturated fats.

The best way to do this is by getting familiar with nutrition labels. By law, all food products sold in the United States must have their nutritional content printed on the labels so consumers can make healthy choices. When you read the label, your eyes should focus on the serving size and the total carbohydrates in each of those servings. Knowing how much is contained in the food is not enough of an effort. You also need to measure out the food in the appropriate serving sizes so you are actually consuming the stated amount of carbs. Keep track of what you are eating and how many carbs you are consuming. Talk to your physician to determine how much of this macronutrient you should be eating based on your height, weight, and health.

The obesity heart disease connection has been well-documented by medical researchers. Being overweight is considered one of the biggest risk factors for the development of heart disease. However, the good news is you can reduce your risk of suffering from this condition by gaining more control over the foods you eat thus reducing your weight.

#1. Reduce Fast Food Consumption

Thousands of Americans every year die because they are victims of what could be called fast food heart disease. Fast food is notoriously high in saturated fat. Saturated fat causes an increase in bad cholesterol which leads to a build-up of plague in the arteries. If you do want to eat at fast food restaurants, choose foods that will have lower levels of saturated fat, such as grilled or roasted chicken, turkey, or beef sandwiches. Cut out French fries or onion rings altogether. Opt for baked potatoes or salads as side dishes.

#2. Exercise More

Not getting enough exercise is one of the main problems associated with heart disease. Unfortunately, one of the effects of being overweight is having difficulty getting more active. Start slowly by walking up to 30 minutes per day then increase the amount of exercise and include more intense aerobic activities as you become able to handle them.

#3. Keep Salt to a Minimum

Salt is one of the main culprits in high blood pressure. Most people who are overweight or obese consume too much salt thanks to the types of foods that make up their diet. Eating more fresh cooked meals that give you control over the seasonings is a step in the right direction.

#4. Choose Low Fat Meat & Dairy

As you already know, eating a balanced diet is essential for good health. Unfortunately, many people who gain too much weight eat larger quantities of meat and dairy products, such as cheese. You don’t have to cut those foods out of your diet altogether, however. Instead, reduce the quantities and always opt for the low-fat dairy and lean meat options.

#5. Increase Fresh Produce Consumption

Many overweight individuals don’t eat enough fresh produce, including vegetables and fruits. Instead of a diet consisting primarily of high fat and low nutrient value foods, you can eat more fresh and cooked vegetables which are high in fiber. These foods will make you feel full so you’ll eat less of what you shouldn’t. Fruits and vegetables can contain a lot of fiber and nutrients. Choose the most colorful varieties for the most health benefits.

#6. Control Your Blood Sugar

One of the other effects of being overweight is an increased risk of diabetes which is also another risk factor for heart disease. Whether you have been diagnosed or are at risk of being diagnosed, keeping your blood sugar levels reasonable is a good idea. That means cutting back on the carbohydrates. Eating some carbohydrates with each meal is necessary for good health but you have to keep track of them and eat them in moderation.

#7. Reduce Size of Your Portions

The easiest way to reduce your risk of heart disease is losing weight. If you want to lose weight, you should start by doing some portion control. Just cutting the size of your portions, especially your meat and dairy portions, you can start dropping pounds and reducing your risk of being another victim of the obesity heart disease connection.

Fast food obesity is increasing at an alarming rate throughout the United States. According to the CDC, in 1994 the rates of obesity across all 50 states did not exceed 19% of the population. In most states, the rate was less than 14%. In 2007, only one state – Colorado – had obesity rates of less than 19%. In most of the states, the rate was greater than 25%. Unfortunately, fast food obesity is a major risk factor of ten very serious diseases and health problems.

#1 Heart Disease

Of all the diseases caused by fast food obesity, heart disease is one of the most common and most devastating. Large amounts of body fat usually result in higher levels of LDL cholesterol and lower levels of HDL. Both factors can increase your risk of heart disease which is the number one cause of death in the United States.

#2 Diabetes (Type 2)

One of the fastest growing obesity related diseases is diabetes. With diabetes, your pancreas can not produce enough insulin to covert sugars into energy for your cells. The rest of the sugar ends up floating around in your blood and causing damage.

#3 Dyslipidemia

Dyslipidemia could be considered a junk food obesity related illness. That’s because the disease occurs when LDL levels and triglycerides are abnormally high. Having this condition puts you at greater risk of coronary heart disease, and most physicians attribute its development directly to weight gain.

#4 Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Women who are overweight or obese have a higher likelihood of developing this disorder which is one of the main causes of infertility in females who are within reproductive age. The condition causes irregular menstrual cycles and excess hair growth. Additionally, the disease is associated with insulin resistance which means it is also a factor in the development of diabetes in women.

#5 Sleep Apnea

Many people with weight problems attribute their lack of energy to their size but many of them actually have a disorder known as sleep apnea. While sleeping, you literally stop breathing and this causes you to wake up suddenly. You may be unaware of the sleep disruption but it does prevent you from getting a restful sleep and can sometimes be dangerous.

#6 Arthritis

While most people think of arthritis as a disease for older people only, the condition is simply caused by strain on the joints over time. When you wear more than your body can handle, the strain is greater and causes arthritis to develop much earlier.

#7 Blount’s Disease

Obesity is especially dangerous to growing children. Blount’s disease is a condition that develops when too much weight is placed on the growing bones in the lower half of the body. This extra weight can cause growth to be abnormal.

#8 Respiratory Problems

Just as being overweight puts more stress on your heart, it also causes your lungs to work harder in order to get the oxygen needed where it needs to faster. Plus, conditions such as plague build-up from high cholesterol in the arteries can make it harder for oxygen to move free through your system. Breathing problems, including asthma, are also more common in obese people.

#9 Liver Damage

Sometimes the body has problems breaking down all of the fatty foods we eat and dealing with the fat appropriately. As a result, fat can build-up around the liver. This condition can end up causing scarring and inflammation of the liver, as well as permanent liver damage.

#10 Stroke

A stroke is caused by a blockage in the arteries supplying blood to the brain. When the blood and the oxygen it carries can’t reach the brain, the cells begin to die off causing permanent brain damage and even brain death. These blockages are more common in overweight people because they are more likely to have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and/or plague build-up which increases the risk of this life-threatening condition.

If you are trying to lose weight, or if you are trying to control your weight, your metabolism will have a crucial role to play in your success or otherwise. Your basal metabolic rate is the amount of energy you expend while at rest, i.e. it is the amount of calories your body burns carrying out normal bodily functions such as digestion, circulation and breathing. Your metabolic rate decreases with age and also reduces when there is a loss of lean body mass (or muscle). An increase in lean body mass will tend to increase your metabolic rate. Lean mass or muscle is denser than fat and therefore weighs more. It takes more energy to maintain muscle with blood and oxygen. Also, your aerobic fitness level which is the type of fitness most associated with running has been shown not to correlate with basal metabolic rate. So, is running enough for stimulating your metabolism, or should you look to other exercises or sport?

As increasing lean mass can stimulate your metabolism, a program of resistance training is worth considering. Compound exercises which involve multiple muscle groups such as bench press, squats, and standing shoulder press are best for stimulating your metabolism, and have the best potential for developing lean muscle whilst improving strength. Resistance training is also useful for improving bone density, which can also decrease with age.

Benefits of Running

Jogging or aerobic exercise is a very efficient way to burn fat, although it may not be the most effective method to develop lean mass, or to stimulate your metabolism. However, interval training may be a way to incorporate running into your training in a way that will have a positive effect on metabolism. HIIT (high intensity interval training) forces your body to concentrate on fast twitch muscle fibers which are associated with power. In addition, high intensity interval training puts your body into a state of oxygen debt which means that your body will continue to work hard to meet the deficit after your workout has finished. This can have a profound effect on your metabolism as you continue to burn fat as you rest and recover. High intensity intervals have the additional benefit of improving the volume of oxygen that your body can take in and process during exercise, known as VO2 max. As your VO2 max improves, so does your ability to cope with handle more intense exercise.

High intensity interval training is relatively arduous, although the duration of a session is short when compared with a jog or a bike ride. A high intensity interval training session would normally take about 12 minutes, and that includes warm up and warm down. A note of caution, however: if you relatively new to a fitness program or you have not trained for some time, make an appointment with your doctor to talk over your plans, and start your program of high intensity interval training steadily to see how your body reacts. Start your session with a steady jogging warm up of around 4 minutes. Then move onto some short sprints with a short period of recovery in between. For example, try 10 second near maximum efforts with a 20 second rest interval. Try 4 repetitions to start with and build up to 10 at the most. Make sure you warm down with an easy jog (it should be all you are capable of!) for around 4 minutes after you have finished sprinting. This does not sound like much, but what you lack in volume, you make up for in intensity and you will feel the effects of your efforts for some time after you stop. Your body will also continue to benefit from enhanced metabolism and fat burning as you recover from the session.

High intensity intervals should be undertaken with caution, but if they are carried out properly, they can be highly effective in stimulating your metabolism.

Although the late night television commercials may suggest otherwise, there are ways to naturally increase metabolism without having to use pills and supplements. And, as most of us know, increasing our metabolism is a great way to also improve our weight loss ability. Below are a number of examples of how to raise metabolism naturally.

Some Foods Increase Metabolism

When it comes to our metabolism, what we eat can be very important. Studies have suggested that ingredients in green tea and the capsaicin in hot peppers can offer temporary boosts to your metabolism which is great to have during meal time when you want to get rid of as many of those calories as possible. Other foods including citrus fruits, lean protein, and milk have also been shown to be effective.

Build More Muscle Mass

Your metabolism is the rate at which your body burns calories to produce the energy it needs to keep functioning properly. Studies have shown that muscle burns more calories than fat. That means if you want to increase you metabolism an important key is increasing the amount of muscles in your body. The best way to do this is by throwing some weight training into your regular workout.

Aerobic Exercise

While we’re on the subject of a regular workout, you should also know that research has shown doing some type of aerobic exercise for 30 minutes a day at least five to six times per week on a regular basis will provide long-term increases in your metabolism. Plus, it will help you shed those pounds faster because an active body needs more calories for fuel than does an inactive body.

Eat Healthy Snacks

While contrary to the advice most of us have been given all of our lives, snacking is actually good for your metabolism. Well, as long as you’re not snacking on a cheesecake or potato chips. Eating four to five small meals during the day keeps your metabolism going steady so you keep burning calories. Otherwise, you’ll have lulls where your body won’t be burning anything, and you’ll be losing valuable fat burning chances. The best snacks combine lean protein with healthy carbs, such as a cheese wedge and an apple. The apple makes you feel full while the protein gives your metabolism a bigger boost because it is more difficult to digest and requires more energy.

Don’t Skimp Too Much on Calories

A big mistake dieters sometimes make is dropping their calorie intake too low. That sends the body into starvation mode and can make your metabolism almost come to a standstill. Instead, you should reduce your calories by about 10% and keep exercising. Keep lowering your calories down a little at a time until you reach the appropriate calorie intake goal.

Drink More Water

Having those eight glasses of water a day will do more than have you rushing to the bathroom every couple of hours. The water keeps you properly hydrated and that’s important for your metabolism since a dehydrated system can’t function efficiently.

Always Eat Breakfast

You should never skip the first meal of the day if you’re dieting. Because your body’s metabolism won’t rev up until you eat something, denying yourself until lunch means you’ll be missing out on several hours of calorie burning time. Plus, you’ll just end up eating more later in the day to make up for the meal.

Adolescence can already be one of the most difficult parts of growing up. With the combination of mental and physical changes, they don’t also need to worry about health issues such as Type II Diabetes or high blood pressure. Yet that’s exactly what is happening because of an alarming increase of obesity in adolescents. Thankfully, there are some ways to reduce your child’s or teenager’s obesity risk.

Defining Obesity

Whenever you worry about weight loss and young people, the issue of body image is of real concern. Because of the media, many young people have a distorted idea of what a healthy appearance should be. Many parents also are in denial about their child’s weight problems. Both of these reasons make it important to understand what is meant by being overweight and being obese.

Today, the main measurement is called the body mass index (BMI). This index takes into calculation your child’s age and height to determine whether or not his or her weight is appropriate. If a teen’s BMI is higher than between 85% and 95% of peers, he or she is classified as overweight. Teenage obesity is defined as an adolescent whose BMI is higher than 95% of other teens.

Reducing the Risk

With teenage obesity on the rise, preventing weight gain in young people is crucial but also difficult. Not only are there more unhealthy foods available more conveniently than ever before but other factors can influence whether or not an adolescent has a high obesity risk. For example, a one year study of 500 teenage girls found that the girls who slept less than six hours a night and who spent the most time on the Internet were at greater risk of weight gain than others.

Obviously, one of the best ways to reduce the risk for your teen is to set a good example at home. Young people learn most of their eating habits from watching their parents. If you serve healthy meals at home and get exercise daily, your teen is more likely to follow your lead.

Dealing with Obesity

Obesity in adolescents has become a real problem but even if it affects your child now that doesn’t mean he or she can’t be helped to lose the extra weight before entering adulthood. First, parents can talk to their children and set some healthy weight loss goals. Discussing the potential risks of being overweight, such as heart disease and diabetes, can help drive home the importance of taking action early.

Parents can also begin teaching their children about portion control. Many young people today have no idea how much of anything they should be eating which means they end up eating too much. Helping them learn how much meat, vegetables, and other food groups should be included in each meal is an important lesson that will benefit them now and into the future.

Encouraging more activity is also vital. Doing aerobic exercises at least five to six times a week for a minimum of 30 minutes each time can help boost metabolism and result in weight gain.

Most of us have heard that an important way to speed up our weight loss is to increase our metabolism. However, most of us don’t have a good understand of how to make that happen. Sure, we’ve seen countless commercials advertising pills that will give us a boost but those drugs are rarely effective and can be expensive. The good news is there are better ways to speed up metabolism.

What is Your Metabolism?

The simplest way to explain metabolism is that it’s the process your body uses to change the food you eat into the energy your body needs. With a slow metabolism, less of what you eat becomes energy and more becomes stored as fat in your body. Faster metabolisms use up more of your calories so you have less leftover to add to your weight.

Maximize Your Metabolism

First, you should realize that lean muscles burn more calories than fat. When people try to lose weight too quickly, they usually end up losing muscle first and that actually causes their metabolism to slow down. So don’t try to cut your calories too much too quickly or you could actually sabotage your weight loss efforts.

Second, start doing weight training activities so you can build more lean muscle mass. The more muscle mass in your body the faster your metabolism is going to be. That’s why bodybuilders can consume so much many calories without gaining extra weight.

Foods that Increase Your Metabolism

When you want to boost fat metabolism, there are some food choices that are going to be better than others at helping you achieve that goal. Take strawberries, for example. Recent research suggests that Vitamin C is a necessary vitamin if you want to burn fat. You need at least 75 milligrams a day but if you eat a cup of strawberries you’re getting 90 milligrams. Other fruits rich in Vitamin C, such as oranges or no sugar added orange juice, would be good choices, too.

At lunch, make sure to have a healthy does of protein which is harder to digest than other macronutrients so it requires the use of more calories. Chicken, salmon, or roast turkey would all be good choices on sandwiches or as salad toppers.

If you want a snack that will amp up your metabolism, nuts are a good choice. Eating about a handful of nuts can not only stop you from snacking on worse for you foods but their protein and fiber are good for your metabolism, as is the high levels of monounsaturated fats they contain.

Other Ways to Lose Body Fat

Besides eating certain types of foods and building more muscle mass, you can also jumpstart your metabolism by eating a good breakfast every morning. You may not realize it but if you’re not eating anything until lunch you could be missing out on lots of great calorie burning opportunities that because your metabolism doesn’t really start going until you’ve eaten something. Just starting the day off with a 400 calorie breakfast can help you lose weight faster and can keep you from indulging in high fat, high sugar treats in the vending machines.

Who wouldn’t want to be able to eat more food and still lose weight? That’s what can happen when you boost your metabolism. A slow metabolism means more of those calories you take in are going to be sitting around waiting to become extra pounds. The goods news is there are certain foods that speed up your metabolism.

Milk

Studies are now showing that women who have at least three servings of dairy products a day will burn off 70% more body fat than women who do not. That’s because the calcium in these products is believed to give the metabolism a boost. Other calcium-rich foods, such as broccoli, do not have the same affect.

Capsaicin

Capsaicin is the ingredient in peppers that gives them their heat. Research shows that this compound actually stimulates your body’s production of adrenaline which kicks your metabolism into high gear temporarily. Throwing some jalapenos are your sandwich or some hot peppers in your scrambled eggs could help you burn more calories.

Green Tea

Not just food increase metabolism, however. Chemicals known as catechins found in green tea are believed to stimulate your metabolism. Having a cup of this hot tea is a better, healthier way to start your morning and your fat burning processes than coffee.

Lean Protein

Because protein is harder for the body to digest than carbohydrates, it requires more energy and that means more calories. By having lean protein at every meal and as part of your snacks, you’ll be giving your metabolism a boost each time you eat. Good types of lean protein include chicken or turkey breasts and fish.

Citrus Fruits

Eating grapefruits to help you lose weight is no myth. Researchers now see that foods rich in Vitamin C, such as citrus fruits, contain natural metabolism boosting properties that can help you lose more weight. Try to infuse plenty of these tasty treats, such as oranges and even strawberries, into your diet.

Spices

Like citrus fruits, many of the spices in our cabinets actually contain ingredients which can help speed up our metabolism. Ginger, cumin, and cinnamon are all good examples. Adding a generous amount of these spices into your meals can give them more flavor and can help your metabolism increase.

Whole Grains

Most of the whole grain foods on the market, such as bread and cereal, are also high in fiber which is desirable if you want to increase your metabolism. Fiber, like protein, isn’t as easy for the body to digest so more energy is consumed in the process and that means fewer calories are available to be converted into fat cells.

Water

Studies are showing that drinking water does more to help you lose weight than make you feel less hungry. When you are dehydrated, your metabolism can’t work as effectively. By making sure you body has plenty of fluids, you can ensure that your metabolism is able to run at top speed.

Colorful Vegetables

Deep colored vegetables are packed with high levels of vitamins and nutrients your body needs to be healthy. Of course, removing those nutrients from the foods takes a lot of effort from your digestive system. And, you guessed it, that’s going to boost your metabolism.

Caffeine

If you’re looking for other ways to speed up metabolism, consider adding a little extra caffeine to your diet. Although it won’t do any permanent good for your metabolism, it will give it a quick kick into high gear that can be helpful during the day.

One of the most serious health problems facing men and women is osteoporosis. The good news is that by adding some foods to your diet you can actually prevent osteoporosis.

One of the most serious health problems facing men and women is osteoporosis. The good news is that by adding some foods to your diet you can actually prevent osteoporosis.

What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis occurs when your bones lose many of the important minerals needed they needed. When you’re talking about osteoporosis bone density is the key problem. As you lose these minerals, the density of your bones is reduced. Low density bones become more brittle and weaker which means even a mild strain on them can cause fractures. As you get older, the risk of these fractures can increase, especially in women. After menopause, the density of a woman’s bones drops dramatically.

Osteoporosis Treatment

If you have been diagnosed with osteoporosis already, you can deal with the problem by taking medications, such as synthetic hormones and bisphosphonates, which can help rebuild your bones by replacing lost minerals. Other medications are also available that can slow the progress of osteoporosis. However, the condition can be very painful and can still lead to serious fractures.

Tips to Prevent Osteoporosis

Although there are some ways to treat osteoporosis, prevention is the best choice. You can stop the development of this condition by ensuring that your body has enough of the vital nutrients and minerals needed to keep making strong bones. That means you need to consume sufficient amounts of calcium and Vitamin D.

Obviously, one way for you to get enough of these nutrients is to consume high levels of dairy products. You should have at least three servings of dairy products, such as milk and cheese, each day. If you have problem eating dairy items, try yogurt which is easier to digest. But if you just can’t tolerate dairy products, you can take calcium supplements instead.

Besides dairy, you should also eat a balanced array of other foods that contain nutrients you need for good bone health. These foods include 3 to 4 cups of vegetables, such as leafy greens which are also high in calcium. You should also drink at least eight glasses of water daily. While water is the best choice, you can also have other types of beverages that contain no sugar.

Certain types of oils, such as canola or flax seed oils, should be consumed daily as well. Four to five servings of lean meats, including fish, are also important. You should also include plenty of whole grains and fruits so you are getting plenty of nutrients that will not only help keep your bones strong but will also ensure your overall good health.

Of course, there are other steps you can take to prevent osteoporosis. Exercise is one of the other important ways to reduce your risks of having problems with your bone density. A combination of weight-bearing exercises, such as running, and strength training are ideal for increasing the strength of your bones.

Not smoking and drinking only limited amounts of alcohol are also good ideas. Smoking is believed to reduce the amount of estrogen in the body which can inhibit bone growth, and alcohol interferes with calcium absorption.

Osteoporosis is a serious disorder that can literally rob you of your quality of life in your later years. This condition occurs when the bones begin becoming more porous and less dense which makes them more fragile. For some patients who have osteoporosis even doing a simple task like lifting a grocery sack could cause a bone fracture. The good news is there are methods for osteoporosis prevention and treatment.

Preventing Osteoporosis

While treatments are available, you should do your best to prevent the problem from developing and it is never too early to get started. One of the most well-known methods is the relationship between sufficient calcium and osteoporosis. Because the disorder is caused by the disappearance of vital minerals, such as calcium, having a good storehouse of the nutrient can prevent bones from losing their density. You need 1,500 milligrams of calcium daily and 800 international units (IU) of Vitamin D. Both are needed because the vitamins help the body absorb the calcium.

If you are concerned about the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, you should incorporate more exercise into your lifestyle. Doing weight bearing exercises (walking, running, jump roping, etc.) help your body build stronger bones. Doing strength training exercises can have similar benefits for your upper body.

Another good idea is to quit smoking and to reduce your alcohol intake. Research has shown that both of these activities increase your risks of developing osteoporosis. Combining these steps with sufficient nutrients and good exercise can help you avoid the problem altogether so you may never have to worry about osteoporosis treatments.

Treating Osteoporosis

If you’ve been diagnosed with osteoporosis or you’re concerned that you are already developing signs of the condition, you can be assured that treatments are available which can minimize your discomfort and your risks of fractures. The most common are bone density medications. These are intended to slow the loss of your bone’s minerals. While hormone replacement therapy was once used for this purpose in menopausal women diagnosed with osteoporosis, this is rarely the case today because such treatments were shown to increase the risks of some types of cancers and heart disease.

However, several new drugs have been introduced to the market which are filling this gap without those risks. These include Reclast (given via injection), Boniva, Actonel, Fosamax, and Evista.

If you’re looking for an osteoporosis natural treatment, the closest you’ll find that has been proven effective through medical studies is calcitonin which is a hormone produced normally in your body. This hormone can be given to patients, usually in the form of a nasal spray, and has shown to be effective at offering pain relief, preventing some fractures, and slowing bone loss. Of course, it does have its side effects. Some people are irritated by the nasal spray (an injectable version is also available), and calcitonin rarely works as well as the other drugs available on the market for osteoporosis treatment.

Remember that even though treatments are available none of them will help you regain lost bone density. That’s why preventative measures are so important.

Today, children are facing higher levels of obesity and heath problems than ever before. That means parents have an even greater responsibility to ensure their children are eating a balanced diet but that can be a challenge. Research has shown that a high fat diet does lead to an increased rate of obesity in children. One thing that can make the job easier is the food pyramid guide for children. Below is an explanation of this food pyramid information.

Background of the Food Pyramid Diagram for Kids

Although the food pyramid promoted by the U. S. government has been around for decades, the government changed the pyramid just a few years ago to suggest a more balanced approach to eating. Color coded sections are now used to illustrate the different types of foods and the width of these sections refers to how much of them should be consumed daily.

While eating a balanced diet is one of the primary recommendations of the food pyramid guide for children, the pyramid also shows a child climbing a staircase along the side of the triangle to illustrate the need for daily activity as part of a healthy lifestyle.

The Basics of the Food Pyramid Information

While the color-coded pyramid may be a good illustration of a balanced diet, most parents need something a little more concrete to help them plan healthy menus for their child. Depending on the age of your children, different amounts of each type
